Ethereal - A network sniffer
Posted on Wednesday, August 29 @ 23:00:00 IDT by admin

Networking issues theog writes "Ethereal is used by network professionals around the world for troubleshooting, analysis, software and protocol development, and education. It has all of the standard features you would expect in a protocol analyzer, and several features not seen in any other product. Its open source license allows talented experts in the networking community to add enhancements. It runs on all popular computing platforms, including Unix, Linux, and Windows.

The main usage I do with ethereal is use it as a "life jacket" when all debugging tools are depleted. Nothing evades ethereal it will show you everthing going in and out of your NICs it has a follow tcp stream which is helpful in most cases, powerful filters and many many more features such as decode packet as, capture stats etc....
