Database server had an error.
while conducting a manual query to retrieve the category list, I got an error message from the database engine:
Got error 28 from storage engine
looking in the mysql support guide I have found that this error is reported by mysql engine when there is no space left on the hard drive hence mysql cannot create it's temp files when queries are performed.
a quick checkup made it clear, indeed there was no space left on my database server. a disk cleanup operation involving logs deletion and compression fixed the problem.
